Just looked at today’s date and realized it’s the end of NaNo Week 3. No blog post update drafted. Aaaaand that’s how my week three is going, folks.
I’m solidly beyond the “beginning” parts of the book, into what might tentatively be called the “middle.” For me, writing the middle is more than a little hellish. Too many characters, too many subplots, and in a rough draft especially, this part feels like fighting through a sea of options that can’t all be explored, and choosing at random what seems like it’ll work in the moment.
Exhausting.
My non-writing life has been especially hectic this week, so I’m behind in my word count goal. But at the time of this post, I’m at 30,000+ words, which is such an awesomely huge pile. It’s more than a solid start. It’s great motivation to keep going, and get to that 50,000 word mark.
This particular story likely won’t be finished at 50k. This draft feels very much like bones. As I’m writing, I’m realizing just how much I don’t know about the world and how things like race and technology function in it that I need to figure out. That’ll be a job for in between drafts. Right now, it’s just a desperate sprint for the end, no time to stop for worldbuilding (or thoughtful, planned blog posts, apparently).
Happy writing…
